Canada Extends Visa-Free Travel to More Countries

Canada has expanded its Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) program, allowing travellers from selected countries to visit Canada without needing a traditional Temporary Resident Visa. The update makes travel easier for eligible visitors and strengthens international connections. It is also expected to support tourism and benefit Canada’s economy.

Eligible Countries for Visa-Free Travel

The countries that are now eligible for visa-free travel to Canada include:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Argentina
  • Costa Rica
  • Morocco
  • Panama
  • Philippines
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Seychelles
  • Thailand
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Uruguay
  • Mexico
  • Qatar ( eTA valid for up to 5 years)

These travellers can stay in Canada up to six months per visit for tourism or business under the eTA scheme.

Reasons for Expanding the List of Visa-Exempt Countries

  • Modernising Immigration: Simplifies entry and updates Canada’s immigration system for efficiency.
  • Economic Benefits: Expected to generate up to $160 million in tourism revenue over a decade.
  • Tourism Growth: Makes it easier for international travellers to visit for business and leisure.
  • Indo-Pacific Strategy: Strengthens ties with countries like the Philippines and Thailand.
  • Global Connections: Encourages international cooperation, cultural exchange, and stronger diplomatic relationships.

Key Benefits of the eTA System

  • Affordable and Fast: The eTA typically costs around CAD 7 and is often approved within minutes.
  • Valid for Multiple Visits: Once issued, the eTA can be used for multiple short stays (up to 6 months each).
  • Air Travel Only: The eTA applies only for travel by air; travellers entering by land or sea still need a visitor visa.
  • Existing Visas Still Work: Travellers with a current Canadian visa can still use it until expiry instead of applying for an eTA.

Travel Requirements for eTA

To apply for a Canadian eTA, eligible travellers generally need:

  • A valid passport
  • A credit card to pay the eTA fee
  • A valid email address
  • Internet access to complete the online application

Additional Notes

  • Not all nationalities are eligible; some still require a traditional Canadian visitor visa.
  • Eligibility conditions (a past Canadian visa or a valid U.S. non‑immigrant visa) are important for some countries on the expanded list.
  • The eTA is electronically linked to the passport and remains valid for multiple entries until passport expiry or for up to 5 years.
