Understanding Canada's Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) allows eligible travellers to visit Canada for tourism or business for up to 6 months per visit.

To be eligible for this eTA, travellers from visa-exempt countries and British overseas territories must apply if they are arriving in Canada.

EU passport holders, along with citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, Switzerland, Vatican City State, and the UK, are eligible for the eTA.

Countries Gaining Visa-Free Access to Canada Through eTA

Canada's eTA program is extending visa-free access to an additional 13 countries. The newly included nations are:

  1. Antigua and Barbuda
  2. Argentina
  3. Costa Rica
  4. Morocco
  5. Panama
  6. Philippines
  7. St. Kitts and Nevis
  8. St. Lucia
  9. St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  10. Seychelles
  11. Thailand
  12. Trinidad and Tobago
  13. Uruguay

Eligible travellers from these countries may Apply for a Canada eTA, provided they meet the required criteria.

What Is “The Catch”?

Although these countries are now eligible for the eTA program, not all citizens automatically qualify.

To apply for an eTA, a few nationalities must:

  • Have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years.
  • Hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa.

If a traveller does not meet any one of these conditions, they must apply for a standard Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV), which requires biometric fingerprinting at a Visa Application Centre (VAC).

Advantages of Canada's eTA Program

  • Lower cost: It is cheaper than a traditional visitor visa.
  • More convenient: The application is completed online in minutes.
  • Faster processing time: Approval usually comes within minutes.
  • Reduced paperwork: You only need to provide your passport and payment details to apply for an eTA compared to a visitor visa.
  • Online application: You can apply from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
  • Long Validity: The eTA is valid for 1 year, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first and allows multiple trips.
