Canada eTA Policy

Canada has different entry requirements based on the traveller’s nationality and how they plan to travel. Depending on this, they may need a Canada eTA or a Canada visa or be exempt from both requirements.

Nationalities Eligible for Canada eTA (Air Travel Only)

A Canada eTA is an online travel authorisation required for certain foreign nationals travelling to or transiting through Canada by air. 

Nationalities Eligible to Apply without any Supporting Documents

The following nationalities can apply for a Canada eTA using only a valid passport.

Nationalities that Require an Additional Supporting Document for the eTA

Applicants from the following nationalities must have held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years OR currently hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa (valid on the day of application).

Travellers Exempt from Canada Visa and eTA Requirements

You do not need a visa or an eTA to enter Canada if any of the following apply:

Status-Based Exemptions

Travellers who already hold a valid Canadian status (visitor, student, or worker) and are returning to Canada only after visiting:

• The United States, or
• Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Transit & Stopover Exemptions

• Travellers flying to or from the U.S. with a fuel stop in Canada, provided they:
• Hold valid U.S. entry documents, or
• Were lawfully admitted to the U.S.
• Passengers on flights making an unscheduled stop in Canada
• Travellers eligible under the TWOV or the China Transit Program

Official & Duty-Based Exemptions

• Flight crew members
• Civil aviation inspectors
• Accident investigators
• Armed forces personnel (non-civilian) under the Visiting Forces Act
• Accredited diplomats
