Canada eTA Policy
Canada has different entry requirements based on the traveller’s nationality and how they plan to travel. Depending on this, they may need a Canada eTA or a Canada visa or be exempt from both requirements.
Nationalities Eligible for Canada eTA (Air Travel Only)
A Canada eTA is an online travel authorisation required for certain foreign nationals travelling to or transiting through Canada by air.
Nationalities Eligible to Apply without any Supporting Documents

Applicants from the following nationalities must have held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years OR currently hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa (valid on the day of application).

Travellers Exempt from Canada Visa and eTA Requirements
You do not need a visa or an eTA to enter Canada if any of the following apply:
Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents
- Canadian citizens (must travel with a valid Canadian passport)
- Dual citizens (must use their Canadian passport)
- Canadian permanent residents (must carry a valid PR Card or PRTD)
U.S. & Special Citizenship Exemptions
- U.S. citizens
- U.S. lawful permanent residents
- French citizens living in Saint Pierre and Miquelon travelling directly to Canada
Status-Based Exemptions
Travellers who already hold a valid Canadian status (visitor, student, or worker) and are returning to Canada only after visiting:
- The United States, or
- Saint Pierre and Miquelon
Transit & Stopover Exemptions
- Travellers flying to or from the U.S. with a fuel stop in Canada, provided
they:
- Hold valid U.S. entry documents, or
- Were lawfully admitted to the U.S.
- Passengers on flights making an unscheduled stop in Canada
- Travellers eligible under the TWOV or the China Transit Program
Official & Duty-Based Exemptions
- Flight crew members
- Civil aviation inspectors
- Accident investigators
- Armed forces personnel (non-civilian) under the Visiting Forces Act
- Accredited diplomats
Visiting Canada for the FIFA World Cup 2026
Canada will host FIFA World Cup matches from 11 June to 19 July 2026, with games in Toronto and Vancouver. International visitors must meet Canada’s standard entry requirements.
There is no separate FIFA World Cup visa. Depending on your nationality and mode of travel, you may require a Canada ETA or a Canada Visitor Visa before travelling. A match ticket is not required to apply, but early application is advised to ensure timely approval and avoid missing the event.
